On August 9th, 1999, I got my first cell phone. It was a brick — a Motorola 330/e. I loved it’s bulkiness, the freedom it gave me, and the way it made my face feel like it was on fire while I talked on it. That fall, I traded up and I got a Nokia 900, which ended up piece of garbage. That phone met a watery demise on the flume ride at Upper Clement’s Park, so I got my next phone in the spring of 2000, which was an Audiovox (I can’t remember the model number). This phone wasn’t bad, and it lasted a long time. In August of 2001, I got a Sanyo phone with Telus. I was one of the lucky few that got Talk Halifax, the best mobile plan in the universe. Unlimited calling 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for $40 a month. That phone lasted me until May of 2003, when it finally kicked the bucket. I got a Samsung flip phone to replace it, and I really liked it. Flipping was good.
On Saturday, my mom sent that phone on a trip through the washing machine. I woke up after an evening of back shift (my first shift by myself, yay!) to a watery looking phone that didn’t function at all. Mike and I headed off to Mic Mac Mall, so I could buy a replacement. And did I ever get a replacement.

I am now the owner of the nicest cell phone out of anyone that I know. It’s an LG 4600 fliphone, with a colour screen, polyphonic ringer, and Java. As evidence of how lame I am, as if more is required, my favorite part is the fact that the screen on the front has a black background and little flashing LEDs that go off in various patterns for various events. I love this phone, and I am ashamed to admit how my I paid for it.
Of course, Murphy’s Law has kicked in, right on schedule. As of last night, my previous phone had dried out and was perfectly functional again. Even the phone book was intact. Sigh. I’m too attached to the new phone to think of giving it back, and besides, Janet has dibs on the old one. So, technology marches on, and I’m on my sixth cell phone in less than five years. An official third of my phones have been discarded due to water damage. Eep.
Anyway, the city is still struggling to deal with the sickening amount of snow that has been deposited on top of it. After all was said and done, we had about a metre of snow — that’s 39 inches to you crazy American folks. I never actually got an photos of it myself, because Russell and Amanda had borrowed my camera. However, Russell did take some pictures of it, which you can find on his web site. It’s pretty insane.
So, I’m off to continue my spring break, which is being spent fixing various computers for various people. Again, sigh.
