I Hate Bugs

Ah, snow. Everyones favourite white powder (well, not everyone’s favourite — I hear that cocaine addicts are quite fond of that stuff) has once again enveloped Halifax, taking everyone a bit by surprise. Generally speaking, winter here starts out with a few weeks of occasional flurries, which are fairly dry and more like flaky ice than real snow. Not so this year — I love how the environment has gotten random and unpredictable.

The drive to work was less than fun, even though I love snow. I think it’s the same for everyone, and I blame it on three factors:

  1. Lack of winter tires being on cars. Most people wait until the snow actually starts to fall before taking this precaution, if they do it at all. We haven’t done it yet.
  2. Lack of snow plowing. I would imagine that, like the snow tire issue, the city hasn’t bothered to get all of the plows ready to go yet. I only saw one on my way here, and it was parked.
  3. Lack of practice. Basically, the first time the weather is bad, it’s been at least six months since we’ve had to drive in snow, and it takes a while to get used to it. Winter driving isn’t always a joy, but it’s not so bad once you’ve gotten into the swing of it. Which I haven’t yet.

Anyway, it’s just about time for me to head back to work, so barring the urge to write on my longer break, that’s it for now. Incidentally, I just discovered a very annoying bug in Windows. I urge you to recreate it so you can see how stupid it is.

In some program — it doesn’t matter which, but I found it using Microsoft Paint when I was saving that webcam image — save a file. In the Save As dialog that pops up, select a file that already exists. Press F2 to rename the file to something different, and then hit enter to actually rename it. Notice that the “File name” field at the bottom of the window will still have the old filename in it. However, if you hit the Save button, it will say that the file already exists and ask if you want to overwrite it. This fact just isn’t true: the filename entered at the bottom of the window doesn’t exist. Hit yes to “overwrite” the file that doesn’t exist, and mysteriously, the newly renamed file will indeed be overwritten, even though a different filename was specified. How obscure is that bug?

I still hate it.

I love that resume guy in linkpool! That’s awesome.

Mark@Work

Yeah, it is pretty great. Go French guy, go!

Steve

Everyone lok at my Car its off on the side of Portland street about in pld Dartmouth in one of the bends in the road about two blocks up from five corners. I have no clutch. It took me a hour and a half to get tha close to home with the poor plowing of the highway. None of the ramps were cleared so i had to come all the way into town and ended up getting stuck. On the bright side i’m getting a new clutch, on the bad side I have no choice.

Mark@Gwen

That really sucks. The plowing was quite terrible.

Steve

Yeah you should have heard me when I saw three plows going outbound down the highway instead of inbound where the traffic was. I just saw the news and the people incharge of the plows said that they haven’t even hired half the people to run the equipment yet for this year.

Mark, where is that picture taken?

Tony

It’s from University St in Halifax. Dal’s CS building has a webcam pointing at the road.

Oh, and ‘Remember Me’ still dosen’t work.

Mark@gwen

"Remember Me" hasn’t worked since March of 2003. Why is everyone noticing all of a sudden?

keddy@home

oh my… Pugs’s little corolla made it Downtown and everything last nite… ahhhh the randomness..

Pugs

My little Corolla killed in that snowstorm, not to mention I am one hell of wheelman.

Colin

Does anyone know anything about telnet? Because I have been trying to teach myself how to use it, I just need some pointers.

Apollo

Remember me works perfectly for me.

Apollo

Also, I am in love with Firefox http://FTP.

Mark@Gwen

What’s the problem you’re having, Colin? Telnet is pretty simple. Connect, login. And get PuTTY, it’s the best Telnet/SSH client ever.

Colin

well I was trying to use some unix server untill i realized it was for unix, but everytime i try to connect to something it says connect failure. and on the odd occasion something does happen the screen goes black, i read something that said that if u turn localecho on then u can see it but i dunno.

I hate not having electricity.
Stupid utility company, they should really hurry the hell up and give me and most of burnside back our power.

Oh, and I freaking hate snow.

Snow is good for one thing and one thing only…giving us a white christmas. It’s should snow at 2am Dec, 25th and the snow should be gone by 11pm Dec 25.

Mark@Gwen

If it’s going to snow on Christmas, it should wait until 8 am so I’m back home and in bed.

Chris

Snow? What’s snow? I don’t think I’ve ever seen that stuff out here..

Castro@Home

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, I have power… sorta, it’s still flickering.
