September 28: White & Nerdy

Oh, man, did Fall ever hit with a vengeance this week! All of the plants are in the middle of their multi-coloured death throes and our car has started getting frosty in the mornings. In another two months, I'll be complaining about snow, but for now, I'm enjoying the change. Fall is great.

Hopefully, we'll be able to set something up in terms of getting everyone out to the corn maze like we want to. (That reminds me, is anyone up for starting a petition to have “corn maze” renamed to “corn maize”? It'd be so witty.) I can't wait to do that and get some pumpkins so I can plan out a retardedly complicated design, only to get bored (and have cold hands) five minutes in, opting to go with a generic face instead of, say, a schematic of the USS Enterprise. What fun it'll be, and without the stress of midterms to detract from it at all.

So, ignoring the fact that I never finish what I start, what sort of motif should I go with for my pumpkin this year? I wish I had a better imagination for this sort of thing. Something geeky would be fun.

September 22: TGIF

Woohoo, it's the weekend again! I've got big, big plans, including such greatest hits as:
  • Doing nothing
  • Watching TV on the couch
  • Sleeping
  • That's about it
As you can see, I'm pretty excited. (If anyone has any ideas for fun things to do, for the love of god let me in on it.)

I'm just at work, starting to contemplate lunch ideas. Today is Sean's last day; he's leaving us for another company. Despite that, everyone seems to be working at roughly normal rates, including him. It'll be sad to lose the only person here who didn't hate Macs, but what can you do?

Anyway, it's David's birthday today, so wish him a happy birthday. I will be interested to know what he does with his birthday present (which he doesn't currently have, so I'll not mention it).
I need some new shoes, people. My beloved green chucks have worn out after five months on non-stop abuse, and it's time for me to get replacements. Well, not replacements, but replacements for day-to-day use. (I think I might get a pair of brown Converses in the future, once my green ones have truly bit the dust.)

Anyway, how are things? I'm just killing some time at work, having been drowning in shell scripts for the past two days and suffering greatly in the process. I've been working on deployment scripts for the past few days, but I'm definitely ready to get back to my normal work. It's so much more fun, and less brain hurt-y. You know how it is.

September 13: Happy Programmer's Day!

Happy Programmer's Day, everyone! It's the 256th day of the year. From Wikipedia:
Programmer's day is a “holiday” on the 256th day of the year celebrated mostly by computer programmers (reason: 256 = 2 to the power of 8 = the number of values representable in a byte of data).
Wow, I'm a nerd!

September 12: It's Showtime!

Holy crap, I'm excited about the Apple event that's happening this afternoon.

Update: I just bought a new iPod. Black. Can't wait.

September 11: Stupid, Stupid, Stupid

The September 11th attacks have to go down in history as one of the stupidest things ever done by anyone to anyone else, ever.

September 10: Morals

What, exactly, are the moral imperatives regarding sneaking over to your neighbours' yard in the middle of the night and cutting the strings on their windchime that drives you nuts every single night?

September 09: Power Plug Problems

So, a fuse got blown today, and once the ensuing power outage was fixed, something wacky happened to the server: it wouldn't turn back on. Whenever something like this happens, the first thought in my mind is a quick (and usually bad) estimate of how long it's been since I've backed anything up. This time was no exception — it's been ages. Fortunately for irresponsible me, the problem turned out to be a bad power cable. After being switched on non-stop for months, I guess the cable couldn't handle being electricityless, like a junkie or something. I dug out an extra cable and realized how incredibly filthy the server was.

So, since I rarely have the incentive to do so, I took everything apart and wiped it all down, removing approximately ten kilograms of dust and gunk. I even took apart the big fan I use to cool it (since it often fries its CPU fan and I don't want it to overheat). Once I got everything back together, I decided to solve my laziness problem once and for all and wrote a nifty cron script that does a complete database backup every night at midnight, so I never have to worry again. As they say on the Internet, “woot”.

In real life, tonight is movie night at the roomie's place, and we're watching Mac and Me, a classic movie from the 80s that everyone has seen, except for me. Somehow, I missed it (and ET — I've never seen ET). So, that'll be a blast. And on that note, I shall bid you good day so I can go get something to eat before I have to leave.

September 08: Will Cry For Change

There's a new episode of Hope Is Emo out. It's awesome.

September 02: I'm in Maine!

Hello, world. I'm in South Portland, Maine as a result of a spontaneous weekend adventure that Mom thought we should take with my grandmother. We just arrived at our hotel after many, many hours of driving. We rented a car just for this purpose (a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt) that's pretty nice and made good time.

We're only here for two nights and not really planning to do anything in particular, but I guess it's fun to be somewhat spontaneous every now and then. Unfortunately, I completely forgot to bring my camera, so I won't be doing much in the way of photos (maybe a little cameraphone action, but that's it).

Anyway, I'll be back Monday evening. Until we meet again, I bid you good day.
