November 28: It's Cold

Summary of my week: it's cold, and there's no snow. As much as I wish the first part of that wasn't true, I really, really wish the second part wasn't true. It's almost December, and we've had about twenty seconds worth of flurries so far. This climate sucks! Out west, they've got oodles and snow (and jobs!)...it's just not fair. I am unhappy.

Alas, nothing too exciting is happening in my world. I'm just working, and (of course) playing an awful lot of Zelda. All of the nerds that I work with have now decided they need one for themselves, and I took my Wii over to see the hippies on the weekend to share the love some more — is there anyone who doesn't love the Wii?

Anyway, I have some mashed potatoes that need eating (with corn mixed in! Mmm!), so I'm off. Suggestions for more interesting things to rant about are welcome.

November 21: Camera

A few weeks back, I decided to buy one of those QE II Home Lottery tickets. You know the drill: buy an insanely expensive ticket ($100) and have pretty good odds of actually winning something. You know where this is going:
Olympus FE-170
I won an Olympus FE-170, which is a basic point-n-click digital camera worth about $180. Sure, it's not a $600,000+ house, but I'm pretty pleased, since I wasn't really expecting to win anything.

I've been spending the past few days furiously playing with my Wii (no jokes, it's old already!) and having a blast. Steve came over yesterday to get a glimpse of how fantastic Twilight Princess is, and I brought it into work today so the guys could give it a go (we're definitely going to have a competitive round of Wii Boxing after hours). Basically, it's everything I could've wanted. I have to say, I'm going to miss that little countdown in my sidebar once it's finally gone.

Anyway, I need to get back to working, so until I write again...wait.

November 18: Saved by an iPod

You know, it's stories like this one that make me love the Internet so:
A lost mushroom picker was spotted and rescued after search teams saw the glow of his iPod early Friday morning.
...
The underbrush was so thick, it took the searchers a full 22 minutes to reach Nou, who, lacking a flashlight, had been trying to use the faint glow of his iPod Nano display as a light source. It took several more hours to get him safely out of the woods, and searchers didn’t get back home until around 6 a.m.
That's a pretty awesome use of technology. I'll have to make sure I always have my iPod with me whenever I'm planning on being in the woods. (Which is, well, never, but it's the thought that counts. I intend to be prepared.)

November 16: Distract Mii

Oh, man, I am anxious for Sunday to hurray up and get here. Can anyone out there provide a distraction to help the time pass faster?

November 12: Exciited!

Wow, long weekends rock. Here I was, lamenting work tomorrow, when I remembered that I had tomorrow off. The only thing better than long weekends is spontaneously re-remembering long weekends.

I've had a pretty average previous week: work work work during the weekdays and general merriment on the weekend. Janet and I went to a dinner theatre thing at Halifax Feast yesterday, which was a lot of fun. I really like dinner theatre, with their deliciously fresh bread being a large contributing factor. Good times, good times. Today, Alex and I had some random adventures (including, but not limited to, initial Christmas shopping), and then I introduced my mom to the wonders of Futurama this evening.

Overall, I'm happy with my long weekend. Now, I'm on the final stretch of Wii waiting: this time next week, I'll have my Wii and be retardedly exciited. I stopped into EB Games today and pre-ordered an extra Wiimote+nunchuk and a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. It's gonna be a blast.

Anyway, I should stop rambling, so until we meet again...just wait.

November 05: Ubuntu

Nerd alert! Guess what I spent yesterday installing? That's right, Ubuntu. For the past few weeks, my two removable hard drives (used for backup and storing music & movies) have been nomads, floating around the house with no computer to reliably plug into. I decided to make use of the Very Old Laptop we had stuffed into a closet, turning it into a house for them.

This wasn't totally straightforward (and isn't even done yet). It's from 1998 or so, and doesn't have any networking capabilities whatsoever. Fortunately, Katie gave me her old wireless PCMCIA card, which I managed to get working. Then, I installed Samba and got that working. Now I just need a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card and I'm all set. I'm pretty self-satisfied, especially since I've never installed Linux or any of its variants before. The FreeBSD machine in the basement was configured for me by Tony back in the day. Once I get it working, it'll be slow (the wireless card is only 802.11b) but if it works, I might invest in a better card.

In other news, it's officially November now. November entails three things for me: anniversary with Janet (on the 2nd), the Parade of Lights (on the 18th — be there, and no, my phone will not be squished by a car this year :), and Christmas shopping. Actually, I'm not sure when I'll do my shopping. Generally speaking, I do it either very, very early, or very, very late. If anyone is going Christmas shopping at any point, call me and invite me. It's a good motivator. I'm trying to pre-emptively get myself into the spirit this year because last year was just a blur. I've already downloaded the old Frosty the Snowman movie and I'm working on the Muppet Family Christmas (aka the best Christmas movie EVER).

Anyway, I need to go cook myself some food before I head out to buy that PCMCIA USB card I need, so until next time...just wait.
