July 31: OMG Apartment!

I have an apartment! And keys to it! And, and, and ... a chair and a dining room table.

Okay, okay, it's not set up yet, but I've started moving in my junk. So far, I've got my books moved in and my bathroom set up — you have to have your priorities straight, after all. Tomorrow, I'm moving in my furniture (bed, bookshelf, desk), my clothes, my computers, and the rest of my miscellaneous crap, having taken a detour for my futon over to The Futon Store to have a broken bored replaced.

I'm so excited! My nervousness has pretty much gone away, and I'm just totally psyched to be moved in. Tomorrow will be my first night there — I'll take pictures soon and put them up here.

Anyway, I need to get some sleep, because tomorrow is going to be killer. Night, all!

July 24: Drag Race

Keddy, Nick and I just spent the evening zipping around town at random. We had an awesome encounter at a red light in front of Alderney Gate: we were in the left lane, and a bus was in the right lane. Nick's window was down, and the bus driver leaned down and asked what kind of car it was. Keddy yelled over that it was a Saturn SL-2, and the bus driver sort of scoffed. He said “You think you can take me?” and started to inch forward. When the light turned red, he floored it.

He lost. But it was awesome.

July 17: Apartment

I got an apartment! I'm super nervous, but excited — it's on Queen Street, a block or so up from Russell & Amanda, a few blocks down from Katie & David, and not too far from Janet (although I have no idea how many blocks). It's super central and it's only a few minutes from the ferry terminal: basically, it's exactly the perfect place for me. It's a historic property from 1849 that has been divided up into six trendy flats. I move in on August 1st (I'm signing the lease tonight). So nervouxcited!

In other news, I saw the new Harry Potter movie last night. I really liked it — I think it was my favourite of the movies (I didn't like three or four). I really loved the typography of the newspapers and the decrees, and I loved the way the story was advanced through headlines. It was totally masterful. Plus — and this was a highlight of my evening — there was a trailer for the Get Smart movie that I had no idea was coming. Steve Carrell plays Maxwell Smart, which is utterly perfect. Although I wouldn't have thought of him, I can't imagine anyone better. This is a total surprise for me, and I really can't wait until it comes out.

Get Smart is one of my favourite TV shows ever. I looked into buying it on DVD, but the complete set is $230 US on Amazon, which just boggles my mind. It's stuff like this that makes people pirate: the studios have made their money back a thousand times from it — it's forty years old! I think they'd probably make more money if they charged less and sold more. Surely it can't cost that much to physically manufacture the discs. Grr.

Anyway, I have to get back to work. But wish me luck!

July 09: Patrick Beswick

Amanda had her new baby yesterday morning. His name is Patrick Beswick and he's super tiny. I still think she should've named him Optimus Prime, but Patrick's not so bad.
Okay, fun new quirk of my brain: waking up ten minutes before my alarm clock. It's like I'm suddenly psychic or something.

Yeah. I really hate it. Since I am so very not a morning person, having the last few minutes of sleep get ruined by my own predictive powers is a bit of a downer. It's not fun being in bed, knowing that you have to get up in ten minutes. I'd just get up then, except I'm scared it'd gradually lead to me waking up another ten minutes earlier, and then another, until all of a sudden I'm waking up before I go to bed. Blah. Stupid mornings!

Anyway, other than my annoyance with my own weirdnesses, not much is going on in my world. Last Sunday was Canada Day, which was pretty much a non-event for me — I spent the day cleaning out the shed and cleaning up the bedrooms from the previous few days home improvement efforts (which mainly involved putting trim down in my room, finally). I did get to go to the fireworks, though, which was fun, and Joey had a barbecue the next day down at his place, so things worked out alright.

Katie and David have moved into their new place, thus prompting me to totally panic about having not found a place yet (where by “not found a place” I mean “not started looking”). I'm bafflingly irresponsible sometimes. It's a nice apartment on a quiet street, and it's a really short walk down to the ferry terminal, so they're set. Plus, there's a plumbing supply wholesaler just down the street — what more could you ask for? Personally, I'm still trying to decide where I want to live. I think I'm just going to start lookng (ha) and see where random chance takes me. Such strategies have worked well for me in the past, after all.

Anyway, Alex just shared this gem with me: the re-united Spice Girls. Posh REALLY looks like she used to be a boy. Take a gander.
